In northern Italy, Bergamo is divided into two distinct areas. These are the città alta (upper town) up on the hill and the città bassa (lower town). San Vigilio, one of the most popular parts of the city's città alta, can be reached by using a funicular and provides stunning views. The città alta is also home to places of interest like the Cittadella and Piazza Vecchia. In contrast to the old town feel of the città alta, the città bassa has a much more modern countenance, and incorporates the city's main shopping areas. A city of over 117,000 inhabitants, Bergamo is close to the foothills of the Alps.
